View Full Version : Starter took a shit

After I started my car the starter continued to turn over as if the car hadn't started yet. Turned off the ignition, pulled the key, and the starter kept turning over. So I turned the car on again and drove cause I was in the middle of nowhere. Eventually during my drive the starter stopped turning over (aka died). It's currently at Saturn, the new starter should be in tomorrow.
Just wanted to share my story and see if anyone knew why a starter would do that and if there was anything I could have done to stop it from turning over and ultmately from burning out?

The only thing I can think of [not a cause for it] is one the car is started just unplug it... a HUGE hassle but at least if you had to start your car again before you could get to a shop you would just have to plug it back in and hope it works.
Can't tell if you if that would hurt anything else.. or for that matter if reaching the starter while the vehicle is running is easy or not.. never have had a reason to.. of if you can the reach the starter without the car being jacked up [I can fit right under the car just sitting on the ground.. I don't even jack it up to do an oil change...lol]

Pulled the battery cable. I heard of one other doing this but it was years ago.

Damn, I was wondering if that might have worked. I had a load of laminate wood pieces I was returning to Lowe's in my trunk, which is where I ended up being stranded.
The craziest thing is my wife's car died today too. Thought it was the starter in hers as well but it looks like it was the battery. It still had power to the radio, lights, etc. but it would just click when you tried to turn it over.
The odds of both of our cars dying in the same day has got to be off the charts.

The dealership actually installed a cut-off switch in the car while trying to diagnose the starter problem. It ended up being traced to oil leaking on the starter from a nitrous installation gone bad IIRC.

Yeah. Dealership still warrantied it though. That's a cool place. They were so excited to see a redline with N2O that they didn't mind. Also, that guy dropped BANK on his car. Bought every mod as soon as it came out and had the dealership install them. K&N, springs, CF hood, grill, man the list was freaking endless. Turns out he was stealing from his company and that's where the funding came from. He got caught and had to dump everything at rock bottom prices. Somebody had to buy the stuff. I volunteered. The deal was SICK.

Lemme see if I can remember this:
CF hood
C2 A/F, boost, oil pressure gauges
5" fully programmable tach
Full wet N2O kit with MSD controller
Kenwood KVT-817
Kicker competition quality componets all the way around
Center channel speaker
All upgrades like music keg, hd radio, etc for Kenwood
DVD's in headrests
I think that's it
All of the above for $1000

Then I sold the tach online for $300 and some of the gauges for about $100. The radio alone was worth over $2000.
The guy told me he was getting another car and wanted to dump all of it. Plus, we were friends and he wanted to give me a good deal. I went straight to the bank. It wasn't until about a year later that I found out how he got all the shit. Made me feel bad, but I just cranked the stereo and it was all good after that.

Can't feel bad when you weren't involved. I'm sure many of us have been in the same spot. If you go to swap meets and such, there's a much higher chance that you're going to buy stuff with a questionable history. I wouldn't have felt any worse than you did in the same situation. But you got a nice bit of stash for that much money.
