View Full Version : Very High IAT2 Temps

Just got my car back from the dealer after having the starter replaced and I noticed some very high intake temps. Cruising to work this morning my IAT2 temp shot up into the 140's very quickly. The IAT1 temps were in the mid to high 70's. That is a huge difference. On a cool morning like today there would usually only be a 35-45 degree difference. I'm also having the rattling exhaust. The muffler shop thinks the cat has come loose from the DP. Not sure if that could be related. Any ideas? Thanks

Intercooler pump inop. That's my guess

makes sense - i don't see how a disconnected cat would cause high IATs....

Same here. Clogged I could understand. Also, if it was disconnected the car would be stupid-loud and you would be more worried about that.

exactly, and you'd probably be throwing an o2 code.

The exhaust rattle is intermittent but when it does it occurr it's definitely loud and annoying. All I know is the muffler shop guy put my car up on the lift and when he banged is fist on the DP you could hear the cat rattle around.

Well then I'm really stumped as to what the issue is. I was hoping to get it fixed Monday but the guy wasn't there and then my starter died. Now I have IAT2 issues. ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then the ceramic inside is shattered. You can't really have an intermittent disconnected pipe like that.

good news is, homie, the feds warranty your cat for 8yr/80,000mi - so it'll be free to fix if it is the cat :)

Unless it is a high performance cat, then you are screwed and have to pay for it. I'd be wary of a muffler shop that think a pipe is disconnected when the cat is rattling though.

As far as the exhaust issue goes, Saturn won't do any warrantee work with it because the muffler shop that installed my resonator cut in to the down pipe to make it fit. My plan was to take it back to the exhaust shop, have them pinpoint the issue, and if it was the cat have them replace it with a high flow. But now I have to deal with this intercooler pump issue first.

That sucks, but the dealership is right. They can't replace a part like that under warranty. Now the intercooler pump is a different story if that is broken.

Called Saturn back and I'm bringing it in again after work so they can do a quick look to see if it is indeed the pump. Hopefully they won't take too long. I'll have my 16 month old son with me and he will tear their waiting room apart.

I know how that goes. My boy is about to turn 3.

Okay. The Saturn tech took my car for a test drive with the Tech2 connected and said that everything was operating within specs. I guess 70-90 degree increase from IAT1 to IAT2 is "within specs". They made a comment about my aftermarket gauge basically implying that they think it is not giving me accurate readings. I really don't know what to do now. I'm sure it's possible for a gauge to become defective, but honestly what are the chances of that. Plus, the readings for boost, mph, rpm, etc. all seem to be correct. I'm really, really frustrated right now.

the tech2 and interceptor should, in all honestly, be reading the same PIDs from the ECM. so.... either it really is w/in specs, or they're full of shit. :)

too bad eco-mod's fallen off the face of the earth, he'd probably know the answer to this right away.

Get another RL, pull it next to yours and let both idle. When they get to operating temps look in the intercooler necks. If the pump is out, no fluid will be flowing in yours. If the fluid flow is identical between the two cas, it's normal.

You guys aren't going to fucking believe this. I decided for shits and giggles to pull my car up on the ramps and take a look at the intercooler wiring. Wired backwards you ask? Even better, drum roll please,

It was fucking unplugged!!!!

That's right. The fucking plug was just hanging there. So Saturn replaced my starter and somewhere along the way they unplugged the intercooler. I pick the car up, notice the problem and bring it back the next day. Then today when I take it back to them and specifically say I think something is wrong with the pump they send me on my way and say everything is fine. LOL

Thank you to everyone for your help.

They did that because when you replace the starter it is in the service manual that you do not plug the pump back in. Didn't you know that?

Everybody makes mistakes. I'd call the dealer and let them know what you found though.

I can see making the mistake at the time of the starter replacement but when I came back in today and asked them to check the intercooler pump and they look at my car and tell me everything is fine, well, that sucks. Either the mechanic lied and didn't thorughly inspect my car or he's incompetent. Either way it's bad.

And the dealer will receive a call from me tomorrow.

Ask for the General Manager and make sure to let him know that they brushed you off becuase they obviously don't feel you are a valuable customer. See what you can get out of their stupidity.

Everyone makes mistakes, yes; but, it's unacceptable when they're working with something that belongs to someone else and won't even double check their work when a new problem arrises after they performed work. Next thing you know, a car will go in for an oil change and they'll "forget" to re-install the oil plug or a fuel filter...

Well, everything was back to normal on my drive to work this morning. Amazing how good the pump works when it's plugged in. :thinkerg:

Good thing for my "aftermarket gauge" (interceptor) that Saturn scoffed at or who knows how long I would have drove around thinking all was well.

a-men there. i like it when techs try to blame shit on my wbO2 gauge :nofu:

My IAT2's typically run around 145 at an idle at op temp.

And damn them. Honestly, how hard is it to look at the one thing you ask them to look at? Let us know what they say, this should be interesting.

Basically the manager just politely listened to my story, thanked me, and said he would speak with the service rep who handled my car yesterday.

I wish I was better at being an ass but I'm not. So I don't ever get free shit for fuckups. *sigh* Oh well.

Plus, I haven't paid a dime since I bought my vehicle. Oil changes have been free, all maintenance has been covered under warrantee so I can't really get a discount on free.

it's called comps ;) "here's a discount on a stg2 kit" or some shit like that :)

My IAT 2 temps ususally run around 110 lately. The weather is getting alittle colder outside. Just got my Intercepter last month, so we really havent had any really warm days. I hate Michigan weather.

Notice your car having about an extra 20HP or so the last time the temps dipped into the 40's?? I jumped on it gettin on to 75 and about pissed myself when the car took off.:facelick:

Here's what I have to say about High IAT's:

Very top is IAT2
Very bottom is IAT
Damn the S. TX heat...in October!!

I've been playing with the idea of insulating the complete intake duct work with a reflective barrier like this one
http://www.lobucrod.com/

My theory is that if you reduce the opportunity for heat to enter the inlet air, then the heat exchanger and intercooler both become more effective. Reason being, keeping as much heat out of the intake air, means that both will have to dissipate less heat, thus becoming more effective. The reason I haven't is because I don't have an interceptor to measure the results if there is even a drop in IAT's.

Just came home from class and my temps were 72. Car loved it. Couldnt keep traction in 1st or 2nd which is rare now cuz of my tires.
