View Full Version : Favorite RL Exhaust?

Well, since my O2 sensor has been out of the car (the secondary O2 sensor) for the last 6 months, I've finally decided to replace it. With as rich as the car has been running, it's also about time that I replace the exhaust. I was thinking of going with the GMPP Extrude Honed manifold and the GMPP sport exhaust. I'm not exactly sure of who makes the best DP out there, or if GMPP offers one.
Anyhow, I just was gonna throw this out there and see about getting some input on everyone else's exhaust of preference on the RL.
I'm looking to go with something that sounds good (not raspy like a H*nda or various other ricers), and isn't EXTREMELY loud...like a Magnaflow.
Thanks in advance!

I have a Flowmaster 40 series and a glasspack style resonator with the stock DP. I like it and think it sounds good, but you decide.

magnaflow, dynomax, are big no no's if you want a good sounding exhaust.

id go with a custom borla set up. i have a borla xr-1 race muffler as a resonator, and a borla turbo seriese muffler with custom 3" piping. it sounds better than any exhuast i have heard on an lsj, and is quieter than any 2.5" catback i have heard.

Did you lose any of your low end by going with such a large exhaust? I was thinking I wanted to stay at a 2.5" and give it some restriction.
Also, who makes a good DP? I'm thinking I may go catless, but not too sure how that might affect legal issues...

no real noticable loss in the low end... first is usless anyway

i was catless and went back to a high flow cat b/c the shitty sound of an LSJ w/o a catt wasnt worth the marginal gains.

... first is usless anyway...psh i remember making that statement on another board and getting cussed out by nearly everybody under the sun. :eyeroll:

i dont know about other RL's, but anything over 50% throttle in first is spin/hop city.

The way my RL is running right now, 1st is great. Normally though, 1st is useless at more than half throttle. Saturn is replacing my DP assembly for free, so I'll probably stick with the stock DP. I'll likely just go with the GMPP manifold and sport exhaust for now. Maybe after warranty, I'll move on up to a Vibrant header/exhaust system. Speaking of first gear being useless...why can't we get a good sixth gear?? I hate having to cruise down the highway at 3k going 70. :end rant:

Just limit boost in first up to a certain RPM and then let it free at 100% for 2nd gear and up. I had my Saturn tech friend use HPT to limit boost at 5 psi till 4k and then it climbs pretty quick. Once I shift to 2nd I have full boost. Guess it also helps to have the SMM's too. I have zero wheel hop.

quaife makes a 6speed conversion..... :)

I saw that one, but it doesn't bring much more to the top end. It just shortens 2nd and 3rd. I really want a highway gear. I'm content with 2nd and 3rd being as tall as they are now.

I have smm's and i have boost limited in first... shes just a fucking beast, what can i say.

3k @ 70 isnt so bad. i usually dont even use 5th unless im going 60+

I have a ZZP Ceramic header header and catless 3" downpipe with a magnaflow muffler. I am planning on putting on a cat because of how loud that thing is. all in all it sounds good, little raspy....

I am running a Pacesetter header ceramic coated, with a custom made 2.5" downpipe, with 3 o2 bungs welded into it. The resonator piping to the axle is stock GM, but I custom made a 2.5" axle back into a magnaflow muffler and used the stock tip.

It sounds GREAT, pops alot on deceleration, and sounds like the gates of hell are opening up when I get on the throttle hard.

I'm not really a fan of Magnaflow. I built a custom exhaust on my last ride which had a DOHC 3.0L V6, and the Magnaflow was just WAY too loud for my taste. I put in another resonator, and it was tolerable. I think once I have the money, I'm gonna go GMPP catback and Vibrant 4-2-1 header and d/p.

I just recently cut off my 2.5in Magnaflow muffler and welded on a 2.5in Vibrant Streetpower muffler. Sounds amazing. Nice and deep, not nearly as loud as the 3in muffler.
