View Full Version : Itching to Mod

Well it's been quite a while since I've modded my car and I think it's about that time again. I'm thinking about doing the K&N Typhoon or possibly the Cobra HE. A couple of questions.
1. I'm not very mechanically inclined. Are either of these installs within my abilities? (directed to mgm1979)
2. Anyone know where I can find the best deal on the K&N? Autoanything.com has it for $230 with free shipping.
3. Will either of these mods require any tweaking of my tune?
Thanks guys.

I don't think either of these mods will require a tune. The Typhoon is a little tough to install, simply cause the stock intake is a PITA to get out... but they include good instructions, so it should be doable. The heat exchanger isn't that bad. You will need to buy some more hose for it, and either buy or fab some brackets to hold in the bumper. If you plumb it in series, you won't even need any T fittings. (don't forget the hose clamps)
I saw a heat exchanger on Ebay for $60 shipped the other day. It was kinda banged up, but you can also get new aluminum ones for $150.

hmmm....I'd enlist some help, for either install...not saying you couldn't pull either one off, but it'd definitely be easier on you and quicker to have someone else to give a hand, preferably someone who's done either of them before.
Figuring it out on your own (or with us via the forum) will probably get you through it, but leave you with a headache at the end of the day.
That said, if you go with the intake...leave the stock airbox in, and that will relieve you of half the headache. Follow the instructions, and you should be fine. Try to fight that airbox and...well........
If you go with the H/E (which is what my vote would be, given your climate), prepare for some hardcore plumbing - and by extra clambs to swap out those stupid ones GM uses (go for the screw ones). There's several of us who have done this, so we should be able to walk you through it - I might even have some pics and/or vid somewhere.
Neither mod will require re-tweaking of the tune, although with the K&N you might want to in order to maximize it's gains...afterall, you would be changing the airflow a bit.

I thought I remember you telling me before that I really didn't need the HE unless I was going to the track a lot, which I'm not? I'm not sure what I want to do. Modding was a lot easier when you were here to help and if anything went wrong, I knew you were only an hour's drive away. You suck for leaving. :domotwak:

maybe YOU should just move out here...where it's better and stuff...
Anyway, true about the H/E and the track...wasn't sure if you were trying to mod some so you COULD go to the track more.
So, if you're not doing the track thing, then go the route of the Intake - it'll prove more valuable in the long run.
Let's see - I might be coming out there sometime in August, if you wanted to hold off until then...LoL

I'll try to enlist some help if I end up getting the CAI. From what I've heard the K&N has pretty good instructions so we'll see.....
Doubt I'll leave Florida, at least not anytime soon.
So anyone know of any good deals on the K&N?
edit: Found it on amazon.com for $219 w/free shipping. Gotta get wifey approval first.

personally i'd do the H/E. then if you DID want to tweak your tune, it would be to add some more timing and get you some more ponies since your IATs will be lower :rocker:

So is that where the hidden power is? It's hiding behind timing? I thought the H/E's sole purpose was to minimize heat soak. I was ordering one of those mainly for that reason. Dayum, I'm gonna have to pursuade Philly to play with my tune a tad and see if there's anything else in there.

Well, my tuner moved to Colorado and sold his HPT setup to a noob, so tuning is going to be tricky. I think I can handle installing the CAI myself. Not so much with the HE, especially considering I'd have to fab up away to mount it or buy the Bwoody mounts for $60.
So....K&N Typhoon it is. I'll probably do the HE eventually when I can get someone to help me with the install.

he still hasn't bought the HPT - haven't even heard from him, actually...
and I'm not sure the H/E would cool things enough to where you'd be safe adding any more timing...in the end, it really only delays the inevitable (heat soak), which would induce knock quicker if you've added more timing.
Unless you're spraying something (cooling-wise), I wouldn't go adding timing anywhere.

yeah i guess the reason i said that was because Eco-mod was seeing mad timing being pulled because of knock before he put the h/e on this stg2 setup

I've still got my H/E and I love it. It looks amazing sitting on top of my bookshelf right now. One of these days, I'll install it. Unfortunately, when I bought it, I was going through a coolant leak battle with Saturn of Corpus Christi. They are sofa king retarded and thought that the two systems weren't separated. Hopefully, before summer I'll install the h/e and see some lower IAT2's. I also wanted to do the dual pass end plate and extra reservoir. I guess we shall see on that, and how everything goes with actually getting the car to run right as it is.
Good luck installing the typhoon. That looks like a pretty good deal on it, and the instructions are pretty user friendly it seems. I'm stuck with the K&N Drop-In right now, and it's still doing me right...but I would like more s/c noise :hungry:

For anyone that's done the K&N Typhoon install on a redline, did you end up needing to cut the plastic valance in the wheel well as stated in the instructions? Will be installing today after work.

I don't remember the wheel well part, but we did do some minor cutting to something to get the bottom plastic piece to connect back up correctly. Nothing major - just kinda cut whatever we needed to get it to work right...didn't use their template or anything.

Don't recall seeing anything of the sort in my instructions. Mine went in with no cutting. A little coercion but no cutting.

Check the instructions and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Anyway, we knocked it out. Not too bad at all, especially with my friend Johnny helping. Two things to note. We had to cut the bottom of the stock airbox so that the K&N top tube would drop out of it enough to connect it to the bottom tube. Took some gardening shears to it and all was well. Then we had to cut the plastic valiance to get it back on. The K&N tube was in the way.
Took it out for a drive. OMFG!!! The sound is great, I mean seriously great. It feels more responsive but that could just me my mind playing tricks on me. Anyway, I'm definitely happy with the mod.
Thanks to everyone for you help.

I'd agree. Because of location Id say go with a HE first. IAT2's are more important and I agree that you'll need something else like meth to be able to mess with timing.
If you did the CAI and had easy access to getting re tunred Id suggest doing it since your airflow will change quite a bit. Not trying to put salt in the wound lol.
