If you haven't seen the stories of Gustav and Ike on the news, then you must not be watching the news. We take for granted so many things in our modern world that when we're plunged into silence and hot, humid darkness, we cannot cope anymore.

The eye of Gustav passed literally within a few miles of my home in Schriever, LA. It was a violent storm, and even as a Cat 2 Hurricane, it caused massive amounts of damage. This area of the state has not been hit with such a storm in recent history, and it was a rude awakening for a lot of people.

My home was without power for about 10 days. Thankfully, after having lived in New Orleans during Katrina, we were prepared and knew what not to do. My parents lost power for 8 days, and when Ike came through it knocked out their power again for 2 more days.

When you're huddled around a TV waiting for news of what happened to your home, you suddenly realize what's actually important. When I went through my mental checklist, I couldn't think of a single thing I left at home that couldn't be replaced. Yes, even my Red Line. Sure, they don't make my model of guitar amp anymore, but I could find a newer one that is just as good (maybe...). All of my computer stuff is replaceable, all of my tools, everything.

Now I'm thankful that I didn't lose any of it, because it would have been one heck of a mess to clean up. But it really made me stop and think about what's important to me. Can you do the same?

Entry Title: Summer Begins

Now that the temperatures are creeping closer to triple-digits, it makes me wonder why I ever thought black cars were cool. I mean, they're hard to keep clean, they show swirl marks and scratches easily, and they're HOT when you leave them in the sun!

But you rarely see cars in black anymore. Some sports cars, but nobody sells minivans in black. Very few 4-door sedans come in "stealth" black. It's kinda ironic, when you remember that the very first mass-produced auto in history "came in any color you wanted, as long as it was black."

Tint would help, but I don't like the C.I.A. look, and I definitely ain't okay with calling a car "murdered out." It might be okay, though, since nobody could see who's inside. They couldn't see the kid's car seats, couldn't see the napkins and toys left there by my kids, and couldn't see that I'm not a 16 year old, and I don't really want to street race your Honda.

Maybe it's time to wash the car... again...

Entry Title: I'm addicted...

To the internet. More specifically, I'm drawn to the huge communities that form there, and the interests they share. I'm fascinated by internet culture, "phenomenon" and jargon.

The problem is, I really need to get away from my house... take my kids along, teach them about getting along with people, show them how to be passionate about something other than Disney Channel (shudder!). They need to talk to people, see people, hug people, and generally interact with people. And so do I.

Since most race events take place when I can't go (Sunday mornings, or week nights when my wife works) I rarely get to go race. This is good for some interaction, but it's not really a kid-friendly venue. There's nothing for them to do, and they can't really get involved the way I want them to.

So I'm going to try car shows. Lord knows I hate washing cars, but maybe I have a car that's unique enough to allow me to have fun with the kids. And they'll get to interact in a safe environment, allow me to have fun with the car (without breaking it) and meet new people, some of which I might actually become friends with.

Should be fun!
